In “Independence Day,” Theo gets his ear pierced in order to impress a girl. He is afraid to tell his parents…even after his ear gets infected. He claims to Denise that his pierced ear is a symbol of his independence. His parents eventually learn the truth. As the episode continues, we learn that both Cliff and his father both made foolish choices…all in order to impress a girl.
I wonder what my boys will do one day…as a show of independence or to impress a girl. Will it be a piercing or a tattoo? How will we respond? If it is not a moral or legal issue, I trust that we will react within reason. (I hope!) I suspect that Son #2 will stretch the limits more than Son #1, but we may be surprised!
