In this episode, Theo gets in trouble…he lies about going to the library while grounded and goes to Coney Island. His friend, driving with a learner’s permit, gets caught speeding and tries to outrun the police. They both end up in jail. While discussing Theo’s punishment, Cliff and Claire get into a big argument. The episode ends with them making up.
Kids often don’t realize that their actions have consequences beyond themselves. This episode was a great example of how kids’ behavior can affect the entire family. When a child makes a bad choice, they must be held responsible for the consequences…but there are often consequences for the parents as well. Often times, the parents’ relationship suffers when they disagree about how to handle the situation…is one parent more lenient? Is one parent more strict? It is unrealistic to think that parents will always agree in such matters, however, it is important that they ultimately present a united front. No one said it would be easy…
